African American Policy Forum (AAPF) (Law School Professor`s Think Tank) Position: Associate Director The African American Policy Forum is a social justice think tank that has been working since 1996 to bridge the gap between scholarly research and public discourse on questions of inequality, discrimination and injustice. AAPF-sponsored programs work to advance a more inclusive and robust public discourse on social justice issues by building bridges between the academic, activist, and policy-making sectors. The AAPF Associate Director is responsible for the general management of the organization. Candidates should have strong organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills. They should also have experience in problem solving, and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point). Basic knowledge of grant-management, accountancy, and event planning is required. Experience with internet posting and blogging (wordpress) preferred. Past Associate Directors have traveled abroad, organized major workshops, retreats and conferences, lead international delegations of Columbia and UCLA law students to Brazil and India, and interacted with key social justice leaders in the U.S. and abroad. The position offers a tremendously exciting opportunity and excellent training for future researchers, academics, lawyers, and social justice advocates. Former Associate Directors have gone on to the Yale Law School, first rate Ph.D. programs in Political Science and international law, and important human rights organizations. We are looking for someone with a passion for human rights work, and a background working on race and/or gender issues. Candidates must be creative and independent and have a comfort level/familiarity with the defense of social equity policies, such as affirmative action and antidiscrimination laws. They should have a deep interest in multiracial and transnational networking, be hard workers and full-fledged team players. Qualifications: . •A Bachelors degree with an excellent academic record is required at a minimum. . •Supervisory experience. . •The ability to plan, prioritize, multitask, and to work comfortably in a small collegial office environment. . •Experience with public relations and financial management. . •Basic knowledge of grant writing. . •Excellent writing and effective public speaking skills. . •Advanced research skills. . •The capacity to work with a wide range of groups in civil society. . •Fluency in a second language is a plus. . •Familiarity with Critical Race Theory is a plus. Academic Duties: . •Research and teaching assistance. . •Provide support for AAPF’s senior staff. . •Assist in the preparation of PowerPoint presentations. . •Coordinate field work trips for students. . •Attend conferences and seminars as necessary. Administrative Duties: . •Coordinate all organizational projects in consultation with AAPF Directors. . •Assist in the organization of meetings, workshops, retreats, and conferences(including managing the travel itineraries of the Directors). . •Keep the organizational calendar, and perform essential administrative tasks – including mailing, routine filing, copying, printing, inventory work, etc. . •Recruit and manage organizational personnel. . •Draft press releases, educational booklets, and brochures, and assist in the creation of power-point presentations. . •Maintain contact information, and manage AAPF’s website, including writing, posting, and embedding information. . •Work with the organizational accountant to administer AAPF’s grants. . •Coordinate fundraising efforts. . •Assist with drafting grant proposals, budgets, and annual reports. Salary: $30,000 -- $40,000 per calendar year, based on skill level and degrees obtained (benefits are included in this amount); a 1 year commitment is required.
